VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT – EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA) is a non-governmental research institute concentrating mainly on development policy analysis and capacity building. BIDPA was established in 1995 with the support of the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), the Government of Botswana and other donors to conduct policy analysis and related advisory/training and public education functions concerning development issues of contemporary relevance to Botswana and the Southern African Region. The Institute now has a staff of 41 of which 26 is research staff, a modern and highly computerized office environment and has been involved in analysis of a number of important areas of national economic policy.
BIDPA seeks to recruit a qualified person for the position of Executive Director. The Institute provides a challenging and dynamic working environment. The Institute conducts contract research and consultancies for Government, the private sector and international organizations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of the Executive Director will be to ensure that BIDPA further develops its capacity for policy analysis and training/education functions for which it has been established. This will entail, amongst other things, constructive interaction with the Trustees, staff, clients and patrons of the Institute, as well as substantive contributions to its research, training and publication programmes. The Executive Director must be capable of providing the intellectual leadership and management skills required to guide development of the BIDPA strategic and operational programmes in accordance with the objectives of the institution and under the supervision of the Board of Trustees.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate for the position will be a social scientist, with PhD qualification. Preference will be given to applicants with particular expertise in the field of economic research, policy analysis and a minimum of five years experience at senior management level. He or she must be capable of contributing to the substantive output and the public reputation of the Institute, and also possess the talents required for effective management. An understanding of contemporary economic and social policy issues in Botswana and southern Africa region is essential, as is a demonstrable capacity for clear articulation of these issues in both spoken and written English.
TERMS
BIDPA offers a competitive remuneration package. The job is on a five year contract renewal only once for another five years.
