Dr Margaret Sengwaketse is currently a Research Fellow at the Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA). She holds a PhD degree in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester, and a Masters of Arts degree in Development Economics from the University of East Anglia, the United Kindom. She has been a policy analyst for more than 10 years and has made significant contributions to policy debates and policy formulation specifically on matters relating to trade. Dr Sengwaketse's research interests include development economics, with a particular focus on trade policy issues and export development; international trade; trade in Services; trade facilitation; and regional integration.

Key projects undertaken:

  • Study to Review and Align Botswana’s Economic Policies, Strategies and Laws. The study reviewed economic policies and strategies and laws as well as institutions that implement these policies, strategies and laws with a view of identifying fragmentation, overlapping mandates and duplication of effort.
  • Study to Assess the Costs and Benefits of Botswana Membership to SACU, in terms of revenues, trade, and other benefits.
  • Study to Inform Botswana’s Choice between SACU and SADC Customs Union Study to Map Investment Opportunities in District and Town Councils in Botswana - The study was commissioned by BEDIA and the overall objective of the study was to identify, quantify and map investment opportunities in Districts and Towns in Botswana.
  • Study to Inform Botswana’s Choice Between SACU and SADC - The purpose of this study was to assess the optimal benefits and costs that would accrue to Botswana if SACU were to either become a nucleus for regional integration by incrementally absorbing all non SACU SADC Member States or choose the dissolution and replacement of SACU by a wider SADC Customs Union.
  • Impact Study on the Mining and Diversification on the Botswana Economy. The study modelled the impact of new and existing mining and energy projects on Botswana’s tax revenues, employment and GDP, analysed Botswana’s diversification experience and policy responses.
  • Position Paper Trade Facilitation in Botswana in preparation for World Trade Organisation negotiations for the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2005
  • Team Member on the Situation Analysis to Assist the Development of the National Export Strategy for Botswana in 2005
  • Team Member on a BIDPA and World Bank Study on Export Diversification in Botswana in 2005
