statement
The study investigated the determinants of birth weight in Botswana using the control function approach and the Botswana Family Health Survey (BFHS) data for 1996. The findings suggest that birth weight is positively and significantly influenced by the mother’s tetanus immunization status, age, education level, access to quality antenatal care, and household income. The policy implication is that improvement in the health status of the children in Botswana (proxied by birth weight) can be attained through concerted efforts to improve the education levels of especially the women and provision of quality reproductive health care services (tetanus immunization and antenatal care) to expectant mothers.
